can someone help me find the solutions for this problem please?
\[(3x+8)^{2}-4(3x+8)-77=0\]
its a disguised quadratix; just substitute a = 3x+8 a^2 -4a -77 = 0
(a-11)(a+7)
a = 11 or a = -7 11 = 3x + 8 or -7 = 3x + 8
I actually got to the second step there. Just not sure where to go from there
11 - 8 = 3x 3 = 3x x = 1
-7 -8 = 3x -15 = 3x x = -5
okk. yeah this was simpler than I thought. So the answer just comes to 11 and -7?
the answer for "a" is 11 and -7; but use that to figure out "x" a = 3x +8 becomes 11 = 3x+8 and -7 = 3x+8.....solve for x
hmm okay. Just to make sure I understand what the next step looks like could you show me?
you mean more than the two times I jsut did :)
I think one of them is 1..
sorry. I'm a visual learner and I want to make sure i'm doing it right :)
we substituted a variable for (3x+8); right? I used a = 3x+8 we found that a = 11 and a = -7; so use that for solving for x. 11 = 3x+8 11-8 = 3x 3 = 3x x = 1
a = -7 -7 = 3x+8 -7-8 = 3x -15=3x x = -5
okk that makes sense. I guess there were most steps than I thought. So now the answers are 1 and -5 I take it? Unless this problem never ends..
more*
:) x = 1 and x = -5 are the solutions to the problem :)
Thanks so much
youre welcome :)
