In short, evolutionary theory gives people excuse to make arguments for not helping others because they need to let `natural selection' take its course, and excuses for considering themselves superior because `natural selection' has made them more powerful. Reading Darwin will only vaguely help, because there is little purchase to be found if you truly understand evolutionary theory.
