What is the index of a radical? When working with radicals, can the radicand be negative when the index is odd? Can it be negative when the index is even?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

index is the number resting in teh crotch of the radical

OpenStudy (amistre64):

odd abd negative give real solutions; even and negative is possible, but it gives complex solutions

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you are looking for real solutions; then even and negative is bad...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...sounds easy enough...I think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if you ever have a negitive under the radical you must pull out an i which means it's on the imeginary number system

Thank you so much:)
