on a map, three towns lie in a staight line. abbeyville is 35 miles from beanton. on the map this distance is 2 cm. the distance for abbeyvill to clarkton is 13 cm on the map. if beantown is between abbeyville and clarkton, how far in miles, is it from beantown to clarkton?

OpenStudy (radar):

There is probably many ways to set this problem up. I am assuming you are into ratios and proportions. From what was given the distance on the map from beantownto clarkton is 13 cm - 2cm or 11 cm. Then 2:35 :: 11:x With x being the distance in miles clarkton to beantown 35 times 11 = x times 2 (multiplying the means by the extremes) 2x=385 x=192.5 miles

Does this makes sense calissa7872? If not you could also look at it this way. From the information that was given you found out that 1 cm = 17.5. so after deducing you had 11 cm between clarkton and beantown, you could have multiplied 11 times 17.5 and also got 192.5 miles.
