find the next three terms in the geometric system 4,-8,16,-32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In a geometric sequence, each term is the term before it multiplied by some number. So if that number is r, then find r if 4*r = -8 Figure out what number that is then multiply that number by the last term to get the next.

thanks for your help but i still dont get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply each term by (-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what times 4 = -8? 4 * -2, right? So as you see with each term, -8 * -2 is 16 16*-2 is -32 So we figured out the pattern! Now just multiply -32 by -2 to find the next term.

ohhhhh thats what i was missing... because i had positive 2 instead of negative thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :) Whenever you have alternating signs in a geometric series, that means that r is negative!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about which number is next in the geometric system 40,100,250,625

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that in a geometric series each term is the term before it multiplied by a number. Just figure out what number that is then find the next term. So 40*that number=100 what number would you multiply by 40 to get 100?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you a teacher?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

40*2.5=100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 1562.5? thats what i got
