A long-distance telephone call costs 39¢ for the first three minutes and 11¢ for each additional minute. How long can a person talk for less than $3? (Round your answer down to a whole number.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just subtract the 39 cents from the 3 dollars. You end up with 2$61. Now divide that 2$61 by 11cents/minutes to get the additional minutes (after the initial 3).. \[{2.61 \over 0.11} = 23.73\] So it's an additional 23 minutes. That gives you a total of 26 minutes of talking time for your 3$.

when assuming 39c/minute for the first 3 minutes its: \[{1.83 \over 0.11 } = 16.64\] and you end up with a total of 19 minutes...
