I am writing a sentence and I want to clarify that 'an' is the right article in the example.

The choice between 'a' and 'an' is dictated by the first sound in the next word. If it is a vowel sound, 'an' is used.
The beginning 'u' in unique is pronounced 'yoo', which is not a vowel sound.

Contrasting example: we use 'an' before honorable, because the 'h' is silent.
