Find the length of the hypotenuse for a right triangle with legs of 5 and 12 units.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (radar):

Pythagorean theorem states where c is the hypotenuse (longest side) is:\[c ^{2}=a ^{2}+b ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (radar):

\[c ^{2}=25+144=169\] \[c ^{2}=169\] \[c=\sqrt{169}=13\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, I got a huge number when I did it?..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, wait, nm, I just cubed it. Wow.

OpenStudy (radar):

It doesn't say what the units were so it is just 13 (units)

OpenStudy (radar):

Did you follow what did with understanding?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't really understand where the 25 and the 144 come from?

OpenStudy (radar):

I should of shown that the 25 is 5 squared the 144 is 12 squared like the theorem shows a squared and b squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh!!! okay. I get it. Thanks :)

OpenStudy (radar):

Good luck,bye
