anyone familiar with the chain rule?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep

OpenStudy (amistre64):

think of it more like a box of gears really. if 4 gears are meshed together, and you turn the first one of them, the others turn based on their relation to the first

OpenStudy (amistre64):

dy dy dc dr dk -- = -- -- -- -- is the chain rule dx dc dr dk dx

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y is affected by x; is x works its way thru "k", "r" ,and "c".

using an example: g(x)=1/ 1+x^2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lets say u = 1+x^2; du = 2x the g(u) = 1/u; g'(u) = -1/u^2 *du: -1/u^2 * 2x -2x ---------- = g'(x) (1+x^2)^2

am totally lost
