Calico cats are colored Black (B) and Orange (O) because the genes for color are located on the X chromosomes. Female cats can receive two of these genes (BO) and be calico in color. Male cats only have one X chromosome, they are XY. Because of this, males can only be black(B) or orange(O), but not calico (BO)
