determine whether the DE is exact: y^2dx - x^2dy=0

OpenStudy (amistre64):

[S] dy/(y^2) = [S] dx/(x^2)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

DE is exact? whats that mean? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using the exact method

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ahh..... and what is the exact method? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use the test for exactness: take partial derivative of M with respect to y and partial derivative of N with respect to x and see if they provide the same answer .....its more complicated. the exact method is a part of solving differential equations

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ive seen that in the textbooks before, but cant recall the details of it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a DE is exact if partial derivative of coefficient of x with respect to y is equal to partial derivative of coeff of y with respect to x. It an equation is exact there is an easy method to solve it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correction; coefficients of dx and dy
