I need help with the order of operations PEMDAS. please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

more specificly, i need to know if Multiplication and Division are to be performed in the same step, as they are found in the problem from left to right. OR if multiplication is to be done first THEN division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1) Parenthesis 2) Exponents 3) Multiply 4) Divide 5) Add 6) Subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just go in order of whatever the problem is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would the answer be for this problem \[6\div2(1+2)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6/2(1+2) 6/2(3) 3(3) =9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reason being becasue you solved from left to right doing multiplication and division together, correct? not multiplication before division in which case you would get 1. 6/2(3) 6/6 1

please excuse my dear and sally ;D

aunt*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but you'll get different answers if you multiplication and division at the same time or multiplication first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The order of "M" and "D" doesn't matter, PEMDAS could just as easily be PEDMAS. Just go from left to right. Same applies for addition and subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can easily remember the order as BODMAS B-Brackets first O-Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.) DM-Division and Multiplication (left-to-right) AS-Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

THANK YOU!

you are welcome
