AnwarA can u help me?
How can I help you?
The ratio of men to women at a certain company is 4 to7 . How many female employees does the company have if there are 132 employees?
You can construct two equations in two variables. Let x be the number of female employees and y the number of male employees, then: \[{y \over x}={4 \over 7} \rightarrow (1)\] \[x+y=132\] You should now try to solve for x, which is the number of women employees.
x=132-y
y=4 right?
so 132-4?
Use the first equation and substitute y=(4/7)x in the second equation.
i'm confused.
From the first equation, multiply both sides by x, you get: \[y={4 \over 7}x \rightarrow(*)\] Substitute this value for y in the second equation: \[x+y=132 \implies x+{4 \over 7}x=132 \implies x(1+{4 \over 7})=132 \implies x({11 \over 7})=132\] \[\implies x=132({7 \over 11})=84\] So, there are 84 female employee in the company.
Try to read the steps carefully, and let me know if there is something you don't understand.
thank u
