A rectangular garden measures 23 ft by 31 ft . Surrounding (and bordering) the garden is a 4 ft path wide. Find the area of this path. Be sure to include the correct unit in your answer.
4*23*2+(31-8)*4*2=368
can anyone help me with my question??
????????
are u sure cong guo?
Let's analyze two of the sides (one along the 31ft side, and one along the 23 ft side). On the 31 ft side, your path is extending 4 ft outward in a parallel sense, but 4 ft outward on each side perpendicular to it. So, your path along the longer side is 31 + 4 + 4 ft, with a width of 4 ft.. Your path along the shorter side is 23 ft, but you don't add anything to it, because you already accounted for it by adding 4 ft to each longer side. So, in short, you have two areas of path with length 39 ft, and width of 4 ft, and two with length of 23 ft and width of 4 ft. Therefore, the area of the path is 39 * 4 + 23 * 4, square feet. Sorry if my answer is confusing! I tried making a diagram but Photoshop was freezing up. :P (drawing it helps a lot!)
Gah, and you have to subtract the area of the garden, which I believe is 31 x 23.
sorry, i misunderstood the prob, surrounding the path is outside the garden not inside the garden, should be every side *4ft: 23*4+39*4= 248ft^2
Wait...with my method, you shouldn't have had to subtract..So sorry, the last line of my first response is incorrect. You have two rectangles of 39 x 4, and two of 23 x 4. The area is 39 * 4 * 2 + 23 * 4 * 2.
i got 184 square ft..is that correct???
no i have one rectangle....31 ft. by 23 ft. and the path around it (bordering it) is 4 ft wide...what is the area of the path??
