It's a discrete value of total energy for a subatomic particle or a system of such particles (like an atom for example...). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_level

so, the idea is, by quantum mechanics, particle(probablityof finding it) cannot b in "any" energy. It can have only energies of fixed value where it can jump by excitation or deexcitation for example.
