Over the years I have seen that life is all about overcoming obstacles and building new perceptions of how the future could be. However, many people live inside a bubble where they only can see the present, and after a long time of struggling for living they start to ask themselves about the future. Where is the future? How can I believe in myself and then show to others who I really am? The two key words inside these two questions are “future” and “belief”. If we are able to find what they mean in our lives then we can create who we really are. I believe personality is shaped thru one’s life experiences and also through learning from the experiences of others. Thus the future is about becoming who you really are or what you perceive yourself to be. In the case of Julia Alvarez, a Dominican-American writer, who explains in all her works how she was able to shape her identity within herself and for others; being cross cultural impacted on three key aspects of her life. She explains how the transition from a traditional surrounding where one is familiar and comfortable in, to a completely different and unknown place where everything from the culture to the values are different; may influence one’s thoughts and feelings.

I personally am able to relate to Julia Alvarez’s negative experience with not knowing a language and falling below her classmates, as I too experienced similar circumstances. Its not easy being forced to assimilate into a different environment where you feel vulnerable as you are unable to defend yourself from others. Alvarez explains in one of her essays, La Gringuita: On Loosing a Native Language, that: “those were the days before bilingual education or multicultural studies, when kids like us were thrown in the deep end of the public school pool and left to fend for ourselves. Not everyone came up for air.”(62). This had undoubtedly been a dark stage in her life where she had felt frustrated and depressed. However Alvarez, managed to stay strong and face these obstacles presented to her with courage and determination. She wanted to show her classmates that she was not weak or inferior as they had believed her to be. She wanted to show them she was strong, and it was this source of strength and perseverance that allowed her to realise who she really was.

The new world was not only affecting her feelings but affecting her thoughts and the way she defined her personality toward others. Who to become in life? Coming to United States Alvarez was placed between different cultures, values, systems and languages which most of the time affected the way she was thinking, her future plans and the seeking of the person she wanted to be. Alvarez expressed in her essay Family Matters that: “Part of the family and also my own person, that full an impossible combination, isn’t that what we all want is to put it all together and become that bigger version of ourselves and still be loved by those who have only partially love us.”(129) in this essay the seeking of her own identity, her feeling and thoughts gather together in order to shape the person who she is. She described how hard was to see that all the family she loved did not supported on her future plans and she wanted to find the way where she could become who she wanted to be and also become who the loved ones wanted her to be, it was hard. I related this to my personal thoughts and the way sometimes I want to overcome this obstacle that limited me from explore the world and destroy the language barriers and just become what I always wanted to become. Besides, not having the support of my family in this new world is one of the harder problems; however, the way of how my feelings and though meet at a certain point of the day sometimes is extremely frustrated, having thoughts and unknown how to translate them to English and most of all how to write them, interfere with my daily life learning and that, really frustrated me.
Ohh i just read it.. omg.. not good...
Part of the family and also my own person, that full an impossible combination, isn’t that what we all want is to put it all together and become that bigger version of ourselves and still be loved by those who have only partially love us.”

The new environment was not only affecting her feelings but also affecting her thoughts and shaped her personality. Coming to United States, Alvarez was placed within a whole new culture,system and language which heavily influenced her future plans and caused her to question who she wanted to become in life. Alvarez expressed in her essay Family Matters that: “Part of the family and also my own person, that full an impossible combination, isn’t that what we all want is to put it all together and become that bigger version of ourselves and still be loved by those who have only partially love us.”(129) Alvarez’s personal pursuit of her own identity greatly shaped the person she has now become. Her pain and hardships are echoed through her words as she describes her struggle to live up to the expectations of her loved ones and yet at the same time fulfill her own inner wants. Alvarez’s struggle reminded me of my own personal battle. At times I want to just destroy all those obstacles, barriers and the lack of family support I have that have blockaded me from exploring the world and becoming what I have always aspired to become. These obstacles are just like chains restricting me from walking and running. The language barrier is like a personal handicap where speaking and writing are difficult. It really frustrates how all these things disrupt my life and hold me down from becoming who I want to become
that is it, do not hesitate to change anything because this is just a suggestion feel free to ask me if you don't understand anything
ok
let me see
i like it... :) there are few words that are little high class for me
