Don't worry. You just need to follow the examples in the book and try doing them yourself. If you still don't get it, go to khanacademy.org.. he's really good =)
And in this case, you don't need to show that much work except simplify.

i think you should treat it as finding distance of complex number.
|0-3i|= sqrt (0^2 + (-3)^2) = sqrt (9) = 3 :)
