Ένας φοιτητής παίρνει 40 μονάδες στις 100 σε μια δοκιμή. Δασκάλα ανακοινώνει ότι αυτή η δοκιμή και η επόμενη δοκιμασία ρόδες θα είναι κατά μέσο όρο από κοινού για την ποιότητα της. Ο μαθητής αναρωτιέται αν caould πάρει ένα C αν παίρνει το 100 για την επόμενη δοκιμασία. Έχει λόγους «Νομίζω ότι κατά μέσο όρο μου (μέσος όρος) θα είναι 70 διότι το ήμισυ των 40 είναι 20 και το ήμισυ του 100 είναι 50. Αυτό είναι ένα C γιατί 20 συν 50 είναι 70."
