it's ultimately limited by the fact that it has limited nutrients available but more importantly, the fact that its surface area ultimately is outpaced by its volume, so it can't obtain enough nutrients/eliminate enough waste to survive if it gets too big.

It really depends on the species. The largest cell known is of the Genus Caulerpa.
