Hi, here is the problem: is the answer 1 or 9? to this: 6/2(1+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is 1, use the order of operations. A good way of remembering it is the acronym P.E.M.D.A.S. which stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what i think too... but we are debating that you do mult and div from left to right after the parentheses.. LOL so it would be 3 X 3 making 9... not 6 divided by 6 to get 1.. we shall see! thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, you always do multiplication before division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, sorry, it is left to right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol... see? that's what keeps happening ...i sticking with the answer of 1... thanks

here, look at this site - http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol7/order_operations.html
