9w^2+6w-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im trying to fiigure out how to factor it im horrible at factoring

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

multiply 9*-8 = -72 find factors of -72 which add up to 6 12*-6 = -72 12 -6 = 6 start with (9w +12)(9w -6) reduce (3w+4)(3w-2)

myininaya (myininaya):

cow? the answer is (3w+4)(3w-2) but I don't get your reduction? (3w+4)(3w-2) does not equal (9w+12)(9w-6)

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

Another way after you have found 12 and -6 is to use factor by grouping (9w^2 +12w) +(-6w-8) 3w(3w+4) -2(3w+4) (3w+4)(3w-2)

myininaya (myininaya):

9w^2+12w-6w-8 3w(3w+4)-2(3w+4) (3w+4)(3w-2)

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

9*(3w+4)(3w-2) = (9w+12)(9w-6) Im just dividing out the 9 i multiplied at the first step (9*-8) just a diff method for people who dont like factor by grouping
