$$(a+b)^{2} = a^{2} + 2*a*b + b^{2}$$ does this help?

Not really, can you explain what you're doing there exactly? I've been working on these, but I just can not seem to figure it out. If you can explain step by step with the problem I provided, rather than the formula, I should be able to figure out the rest of the problems on my assignment. Thanks. :)

I have problems understanding formulas. Not sure why. I just see letters and such that, to me, don't coincide with the problem I'm working on at all, then I get frustrated and feel like I can't do it.
