7/8 - 3/20 it's about LCD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the least common denominator is 4 multiply 7/8 by 5 and 3/20 by 2...then just add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry 40

OpenStudy (radar):

Look like the LCD is 40. It is 40 as both 8 and 20 will divide into it and it is the smallest number that will do that as 8 won't go into 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but the choices says something like 7[3] 3[5] - - - 8[3] 20 [5]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it's hard to put it lemme say it..7over 8 multiplied by 3 over 3 and 3 over 20 multiplied by 5 over 5

OpenStudy (radar):

Choices should include: 7(5) 3(2) ----- - ----- 8 (5) 20 (2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what i'm trying to look for thankk yhuuu :) but i still dnt get it LOL

OpenStudy (radar):

Well when you work it out you get 35/40 - 6/40 = 29/40 If you will review the above you will see that to convert to lowest common denominator you are actually only multiplying the fraction. In this case the firs was multiplied by 5/5 or 1, the second by 2/2 or 1, and when you multiply by 1 you don't change the value of the fraction.....just the appearance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well what about 11 8 --- - --- 20 15

OpenStudy (radar):

Smallest number that both 20 and 15 will both go into is 60. LCD is 60 11 (3) 8 (4) ------- - --------- 20(3) 15(4) 33 32 1 ------- - -------- = ---- 60 60 60
