Well when you work it out you get

35/40 - 6/40 = 29/40

If you will review the above you will see that to convert to lowest common denominator you are actually only multiplying the fraction. In this case the firs was multiplied by 5/5 or 1, the second by 2/2 or 1, and when you multiply by 1 you don't change the value of the fraction.....just the appearance.
