Surface Area of the attached figure? help would be much appreciated!!<33

OpenStudy (radar):

Step 1 Find the height of the triangle. height is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose two are 8 and 12 cm respectively. square and sum: 64+144=208. take sq rt of 208 and get 14.42. Area of triangle face =1/2 base times height=.5X16X14.42=115.377 sq cm.There are 4 of them so total triangle sides area is 461.51 sq cm. The base is a square so area is 16 cm x 16 cm =256 sq cm. Total surface area is 717.5 cm sq.

thanks so much! But i thought that their were only 3 triangles?

OpenStudy (radar):

Well maybe you're right, but I think there is one at the rear making it a pyramid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if there were only 3 triangles would the answer be a lot different?

OpenStudy (radar):

If there is only three, then do not multiply the surface are of the triangle by 4, but by 3.

OpenStudy (radar):

but I am pretty there are four sides to that pyramid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH now I see it it's like a pyramid on it's side okay yeah you're right, but how do you know that the height is 16 I thought it was 12?

OpenStudy (radar):

the height of the pyramid center is 12 cm (given) to calculate the triangle sides you need the height (slant height) of the triangles. To determine that you can see that would be the hypotenuse of a triangle whose base would be between the center and midpoint of the edge (8 cm). With the other leg going from the ground at the center of the pyramid to the top which is given as 12 cm. So there is a right triangle (not shown) with two sides of 8 and 12 whose hypotenuse is the slant height of the triangle surface (slant height)

OpenStudy (radar):

You would have to calculate that using the phytogarem theorem (spelling is wrong, but I think you know what I mean

OpenStudy (radar):

that is where the 14.42 cm came from.

oh okay I got it now thanks so much again!! <33
