this uses pythagorean's theorem For all 90degree triangles we know that \[side1^{2} + side2^{2} = hypotenuse^{2}\] so \[5^{2} = y^{2} + (3+x)^{2}\] from there, just seperate the variables so x is on one side and y is on one side and solve for each
