on the fastest speedways, some drivers reach average speed of 3 miles per minute. Write a formula that gives the number of miles M that such a driver would travel in x minutes. How far would this driver travel in 33 minutes? The formula is M=___ The distance is ___ mi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay if you drive 3 miles in one minute, how many miles will you travel in 2 minutes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay good. how many miles would you travel in 3 minutes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get that I multiply but I think I am confused by the question. I got 66 miles but I guessnI am confused by the distance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

distance is basically how much you travel in a certain time. so you travel a distance of 3 miles in one minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how many miles would you cover in x minutes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is what I am confused by the only thing I can come up with is 33 miles is 66 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am sorry 99 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

99 minutes? or miles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

99 miles in 33 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay good. so what is the relationship between M and x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

M=99 33mi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 miles --> 1 minute M miles---> x minutes what is the relation between M and x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ireally don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. in one minute you travel (3 times 1) miles. in two minutes you travel (3 times 2) miles in three minutes you travel (3 times 3) miles in x minutes you travel (3 times x) miles. so number of miles (M) traveled in x minutes is 3x therefore M = 3x miles, where x is in minutes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now I am really confused. S 3x=99 miles is that it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the formula is M = 3x the distance traveled in 33 minutes is M = 3 times 33 = 99 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I understand thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are welcome. dont get confused by letters such as M and x and so on. It is painful to write you travel 3 times the number of minutes in that time. so we assign variables such as M and x to the distance and time and write it in mathematical form. it is much easier to write M =3x as long as you know what M and x stand for.

thanks
