What is the solution of the equation 4x+17=45?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isolate x by first subtracting 17 from both side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then we get 4x=28?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then divide both side by 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-17 on both sides and then divide by 4 and get X=___ 7 if you need the answer.

Here is how to solve such an equation... 1) 4x = 45 - 17 (explanation: you want to separate the x onto the left of the equal sign and the numbers alone onto the right side of the equal sign, but they will go through this equal sign and change signs (in this case 17 is positive so it'll going to go through the equal sign and become negative 17) 2) 4x = 28 (explanation: you just calculate what 45 minus 17 is so you can find out what x will equal to) 3) x = 28/4 (explanation: this is standard that whatever you have already on the right side of the equal sign will be on the top and whatever was in front of the x will be on the bottom and then you just calculate that fraction and will be able to find out what x equals to) 4) x = 7 (explanation: 28 divided by 4 equals 7) That's all. Enjoy doing some more based on those explanations I gave you.

multiplication becomes division and vice-versa as it passes the = sign of an equation. That is because multiplication is the opposite of division. the 4 is seperated from x and turned into division of the right side of the equation. This isolates x by itself.
