Country name should be considered singular or plural? Saw this in a sports channel: India ARE trailing by 20 runs India WINS the match

It is singular. I often see this mistake with a company, as well. People mistakenly write "Apple announced they would introduce a new iPad..." It should read "Apple announced it would..."
