Explain why even-even nuclei are mostly stable against B-decay

because of pairing, they have a low potential energy. Odd-odd nuclei are usually not as stable (usually have a higher potential energy) because of lack of pairing, which means that, usually, even-even nuclei (whose first step in beta decay is going to odd-odd nuclei) won't decay (because of the jump in energy).
