Easiest way to know if a quadratic can be factorised or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have an example one.... all you have to do is the first number times the last and what times would adds up to the middle number if you have an example i can better explain it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x^2-2x-1=0

quadratic formula

I know how to solve it... i just want your opinion on the easiste way to identify if the quadratic can be factorised or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*easiest

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you would do 5 timesd -1 which is -5 then see if anything times eacother equals -5 if not it cant be factored.... one that can be is 4x^2-8x+3 4 times 3 = 12 then -6*-2= 12 and also equals -8 when added therefore -6 and -2 are the factos
