I have a kidney shaped pool. the width of the kool deck is 4 foot wide. the outer dimension of the kool deck is 98 feet and the inner dimension is 83 feet. I am looking for the total square footage of the kool deck. Can you help? Walt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm having trouble understanding what the dimensions you are giving are referring to. Can you try to explain the geometry to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The outer dimension of 98 feet is the perimeter dimension (around the total outside edge of the kool deck. and the 84 foot dimension is the inner most dimension of the kool deck using a digital walking tape mesure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we are talking about 2 rectangles, one with perimeter 98 and then one inside of it with perimeter 84, and you want the area of the path around the pool?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or are things curving around and going all the way up to the pool?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is what i'm trying to figure out. the kool deck width is 4 feet wide.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer depends on the shape of the pool deck. Is it an oval or rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oval (really kidney shaped)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I came up with a total of 364 sq ft of kool deck surface.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats right, you stretch the oval into a rectangle and its width is 4 and length is the average of the inner and outter dimensions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

((98+84)/2)*4=364. I'm geussing that's what you did too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, actually when you said two rectangles that gave me the idea of multiplying 84' x 4' + (2 divided by 4 x 14)... thanks for coming up with the same number as I did. I am out as of now. Thanks again. Walt

bye

I came up with a total of 364 sq ft of kool deck surface.

oval (really kidney shaped)
