what is an extraneous solution, and how do you deterine if a solution is extraneous?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Extraneous solution is something introduced while searching for your answer. It occurs often when you square an equation. For example 3x3=9 If I were to square 9 I would get + or - 3, but only +3 was in my original equation. This happens often in solving trig equations.

If I were to take square root of 9, I meant to say.
