how do you sketch a graph of a step function (floor function) without using a table? Is there a standard equation like there is for a parabola? For example y=floor(3x+2)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

floor is the largest integer not greater than its argument, and in your case (3x+2). You look at intervals of x values that will have the same value of floor(3x+2) and then plot each step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you want to look at intervals of size 1/3 in your case

so there isn't a standard equation that could help you sketch it without a table? like a parabola where it's y=+or-a(x-h)^2+k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it is discrete line segments, there isn't a nice equation typically for the floor function, we just use floor(x)

oh okay...thanks
