Is y=5/x a linear equation? If not, why?

OpenStudy (mattfeury):

no. to be a linear equation, the 'degree' of x (that is, the power to which it is raised) must be 1. in this case, since x is in the denominator, it is the same as \[y= 5 x^{-1}\]
