Are you unclear on the process of adding/subtracting mixed numbers? Also, are you intended to leave it as a mixed number or no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im unsure how to subtract a mixed number and I have to leave it as a mixed number . When I figured it out I got a negative number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

397/9-223/6 397*2-223*3 ------------ 18 794-669 ---------- 18 125/18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 17/18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uzma how did u get that??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mixed fraction are changed into improper fraction, simplified by taking lcm, expressed im mixed fraction again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The other option when dealing with mixed numbers is to just subtract the whole parts from each other, and the fractions from each other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then if you get a sign conflict you just 'borrow' from the whole part

In this case for example: 44-37 = 7 1/9 - 1/6 = 2/18 - 3/18 = -1/18 7 - 1/18 = 6 17/18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes ty
