Simplify the expression cos^2 x -------- 1 + sin x A) 1 - sin x B) tan^2 x C) sec^2 x D) 1 E) 1 + cos x

OpenStudy (watchmath):

hint: \(\cos^2 x+\sin^2x =1\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which gives me 1 - sin^2x ----------- 1 + sinx but i'm not sure where to go from there

OpenStudy (watchmath):

good! notice that the top is a difference of two squares.

OpenStudy (watchmath):

so we can factor the top :D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which gives me (1-sinx)(1+sinx) -------------- 1+ sinx which = 1- sinx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is the answer just A?

OpenStudy (watchmath):

perfect! :D
