How do you do inequalities?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you have an example? they are just like equations but with a slight hiccup in them

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when we multiply or divide them by a negative number; we need to reverse the symbol, and heres why 5 > 3 ; multiply both sides by -1 -5 > -3 is false; so we flip the symbol to account for it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-5 < -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what

OpenStudy (amistre64):

'wait what' is not a comprehensible response that i can really respond to.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry heres one i need help with p+(-3)>-6

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ok how would we solve for 'p' if this was an equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 3 to both sides?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then do that with this :) p > -3 is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well what about this one? -2y<10 - this btw is a less than or equal to sign

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-2y </ 10 how would we normally solve something like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that i do not know but i think it has something to do with division

OpenStudy (amistre64):

your are right about that :) divide both sides by -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get why

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-2y has a -2 stuck to it right? its is multiplied right on there..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how do we undo multiplication?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh division

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then to unstick it; we divide by -2 right :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it would be -5

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yes .... but we have the hiccup here... we had to multiply or divide the y by a negative number... right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean by hiccup

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i mean that they dont tell you this little fact when you do equations because its redundant..... but whenever you have to multiply the variable by a negative number; ALWAYS flip your sign around..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (amistre64):

an = sign flip around looks like = so its a step they omit to tell you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

> flips around to be < < flips around to be > = flips around to be =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be y \[\ge\]-5

OpenStudy (amistre64):

exactly :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a lot how do i give u a medal

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hit f5 if you wanna refresh your browser and youll see a good answer next to my name

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alternatively you can just swap the left and right sides by adding.. -2y < 10 +2y - 10 + 2y - 10 ============== -10 < 2y Then do the division normally.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey i know u polpak

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember sabb from yesturday?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

vaguely yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats me i forgot my password so i made a new account

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

serioiusly
