It's both, depending on what part of the media you're focusing on, and your personal outlook. For example, the scandle of Arnold Swarchenager, while you may find it ridiculous to focus that much on something like that, and hurtful to the family, but it may hearten some others who are going through similar issues, because they get to know and understand that this tragedy isn't something that only happens to 'normal' people, that riches and fame doesn't always equate happiness.

it is useful to view the morals of a society, using Arnie again, does this society believe a man has the right to 'sow his wild oats' for example, or are they against it? What do people think about the woman who had the baby? Do people think someone famous has a right to a different moral code than an 'ordinary' person? What do people think of his wife's response/should be his wies response? A polygamous society may have a different view. A sexist society may have a different view. 

Or, what do people think about the Charlie Sheen trainwreck? Do people support his wild drug taking ways? Do they think he is a winner? Are there people who are envious of his lifestyle? Should he have been fired from the tv show? What does it mean to be successful?
