A ladder is resting against a wall. The top of the ladder touches the wall at a height of 12 ft. Find the length of the ladder if the length is four ft more than the distance from the wall.

12^2 + (l+4)^2 = l^2
got those backwards....

144 + l^2 = l^2 +16 +8l
128 -8l = 0 8(16 -l) l = 16; so ladder = 20?
12^2 +16^2 = 20^2 maybe?
20 ft looks right to me
