The allies began the invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944. It was called D-Day for departure day.
First it was occupied by Nazi Germany (1940) then it was invaded by the greatest maritime invasion in history (the allies, USA, Britain, Canada, Free French , Free Polish) in 1944.
Normandy was the major offensive on to the land that germany was defending. The beach was divided into 5 sections, for each of the invading nations: Gold - Canadian troops Juno - Canadian troops Omaha - American troops Utah - American troops Sword - British troops This was the bloodiest battle of WWII, over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. Oh and D-Day does not mean day of departure, it's military code actually it simply means "day" but is used to describe a day of attack; there is also H-hour to describe the hour in which an attack is initiated.
