for instance Find two positive numbers whose product is 900 and whose sum is a minimum. (Give your answers in increasing order.) The 2 numbers x and 900/x have a product of 900. To find when their sum is a minimum, find the lowest value of y for the equation y = x + 900/x where x is positive. This occurs when x = 30 from its graph. You can also find this minimum value by finding the first derivative of y = x + 900/x, setting it equal to zero, and solving for x. f'(x) = 1 - 900/x² 1 - 900/x² = 0 x² - 900 = 0 x² = 900 x = 30
