Op-amp is basically a differential amplifier. If v1 & v2 are the voltages applied at the input terminals, then output will be amplified version of (v1-v2). It is an awesome device with a wide range of applications. Its called an operational amplifier, as it was used for performing various mathematical operations in the earlier analog computers.
