advage = Average? If you do mean the amount/number of fingers the average person had in 1962, it would be 10.

At birth or at death? Most start with ten. Some fingers are lost along the way. Not lost like a set of car keys. Most people who lose fingers didn't misplace them, they know what happened. Yet for some reason we like to say they "lost a finger."
