how do you find the square root? example 53

OpenStudy (amistre64):

by hand or by calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can do it by trial and error. For example, the integer whose square is closest to 53 is 7 as 7 times 7 is 49 but 8 by 8 is 64; therefore, the square root of 53 (call this sqrt(53) for now) must be between 7 & 8. Since 49 is nearest to 53 than 64, try squaring 7.5. If 7.5 has a square larger than 53 (which it does), try 7.25, etc.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

7 . 2 ---------------- |53 . 00 00 00 00 49 ------- 14_ |400 284 ----- 144_| 11600

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its easier to do on paper lol...
