the sin(30) does not give an answer back in degrees so my best guess at deciphering this is no

Well, I put in the sine 30, and it just gave me -0.988031624 So is the sine of 30 not even the same thing as the sine of 30 degrees?

Your calculator is probably set to radians. You must change the mode to degrees.
