john has ten coins that are all nickels and dimes the sum of those coins are 95 cents what is the equation for each nd how may nickels nd dimes are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is the number of nickels y is the number of dimes x + y = 10 .05x would be the amount of money you would have if you had x nickels .10y would be the amount of money you would have if you had y nickels .05x + .10y = .95

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + y = 10 .05x + .10y = .95 multiply the top equation by (-.10) so the y's will cancel -.10x - .10y = -1.00 .05x + .10y = .95 Add these equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-.05x = -.05 divide both sides by -.05 x = 1 so you have 1 nickel y = 9 so you have 9 dimes that would be 10 coins and 1 nickel is 5 cents and 9 dimes is 90 cents for a total of 95 cents
