in a problem like -6 - 2 - -3- -10=5 why would i add the ten instead of subtracting it ?

because - (-10) = 10 treat the negative signs like (-1) if you multiply two (-1) what do you get? 1 and 1 times anything is the same as the number you are mulstiplying it .
