Diatom is a major group of algae and is one of the most common types of phtoplankton... It is considered as a plant-like protist since it is PHOTOSYNTHETIC. This means that it can produce its own food through the process called photosynthesis. It is also one of the producers within the marine food-chain. If you need more clarifications, just tell me. ^_^
