How do you find the apothem of an octagon with the radius of 10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

excuse my ignorance but what is the apothem?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is the octagon drawn inside or outside of a circle?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its the height of a "face"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an apothem is a line drawn from the center of the shape to the outside. Like a radius of a circle.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its perp to the edge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ty

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the thing is; is this radius of a circle drawn insid the shape of outside the shape? inside would mean the apothem = radius

OpenStudy (amistre64):

outside woud be the sin of an interior angle

OpenStudy (amistre64):

360/8 = 45 degrees as a central angle and each 'other' angle of the is (180-45)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, we're assuming that the octagon has all angles equalling 360 degrees.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

your apothem = r sin[(180-45/2)]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im assuming a circle divide into 8 pieces has central angles of 45 degrees :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

an isoceles triangle with a top angle of 45 has 67.5 as its two bottom angles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I think I get it. Thank you amistre64.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are a goooooood person to help me. :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

:) as long as I can understand the questions lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

9.24 or so...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you a million times
