Most of the African and Asian peoples were in the colonies of the Empires headed by the West European Powers. The Empires did harm in two major ways. They made most of these lands as source of cheap labour and raw material and it affected any possible growth of industries in these regions. And, secondly, these lands had significant social contradictions which were exacerbated with exposure to Western values of modern society. Therefore, nationalism became one of the important feature of the emergent middle class in these countries who wanted to create a national economy that would have much better under the global situation of the day. Therefore, the call to throw down the gauntlet of imperialism.
